...organize a jam session in your living room with the dead (lineup of your choice) and ONE other non-dead artist, who would it be?

I gotta say coltrane, with the dead c. '73. Or Dr. John, with the dead C. '71.

Any ideas?

BobW - rhythm guitar

One obvious choice for me: Ludwig van Beethoven. In his earlier years before he went stone deaf, he was as famous as an improviser as a composer. His solo piano improvisations were legendary and brought his listeners to tears. I'd substitute him for Keith and take the band from late 73, after teaching them their later songs so they could perform them if needed. I think Playin->1st movement 9th Symphony->Terrapin->1st movement 6th symphony->Wharf Rat->9th symphony finale would be a good setlist, it has some of the mediant key relationships Beethoven pioneered which would stretch the GD in a nice direction, but I'm confident Ludwig B could lead them through it.

It would be nice if Gustav Mahler was available to act as conductor/composer for the ensemble, but perhaps that would be greedy to indulge the fantasy to that extent.

I was thinking earlier of a all star Russian Lullaby: all the great artists who performed the song playing it together. Leon Redbone could play rhythm and split vocal duties with ella fitzgerald. Garcia (of course) on lead guitar but John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie on horns. Irving Berlin, of course, conducting. Ah but to dream....

once you get up to the vince years, I'd recommend John Cage and Vince collaborate on Cage's 4′33″

David Bromberg...

Grisman, of course...

the song catalog with either would go on forever.

Tiny Tim, Syd Barrett, Adam AND the Ants & Grace Slick.
Should be a night to remember...

edit~ yes, these people are, or mostly dead (literally, or career wise anyway)

Excellent suggestion Rich. Love the band, but they are far from being dead.
They are still on tour:

My first thought was Oscar Petersen, but I'd plump for the young Louis Armstrong. (Got two names in by default)

Early line up '68, '69 ish with Danny Kirwan additional guitar.
Line up after '72, with Mike Finnigan on keys.

I like Mike Finnigan for the Hammond B-3 and Richard Manuel
on piano late of the Band.I seriously don't think you any more guitars. Also Manuel was equally at ease at drums and some guitar. Maybe a favorite of mine if you did want another guitarist would be Elvin Bishop.
